Anibal Troilo was a bandoneon player, bandleader and a
composer. He was mostly self taught and played in tango bands since the age of
13. Troilo is considered one of
the legends of tango music in Argentina in the twentieth century. During his career, he made more than 400 songs
and dozens of compositions. He was also
one of the first bandleaders whose recordings were sold internationally. Troilo
inspired many other players including
the most famous Astor Piazzolo.
Along with Carlos Gardel , Troilo is considered one of the two
important figures of the classic tango
In 1937, his own band made debut in 1937 in Buenos Aires. It quickly became as the leading band of its time. Some of Troilos famous songs were Barrio de tango and Sur, were a tango classics in the 1940’s. that was written with by lyrcisist Homero Manzi. He also wrote music for a long running musical called El patio de la morocha. From 1950’s, he also worked with smaller groups such as the Troilo-Grela Quartet with guitarist Roberto Grela and his own Anibal Troilo Quartet which he made many recordings with. One of the albums in 1963 called Troilo-Grela shows his excellent bandoneon technigue. Until his death on May 18,1975, Troilo remained active as a performer and recording artist.
